The Cummins QSB 380
Why Cummins was my first choice when re powering
My first Cummins B Series was a home grown affair and after installation in Santa Maria and later uprated and re-installed in Miss Daisy I got to know every inch of the engine. When I needed more power I turned to the latest generation of Cummins QSB engines. Why?
My old Cummins B Series engines offered good power density and very little smoke. However a small increase in weight and overall size has brought a huge increase in performance, low low noise and absolutely NO smoke.

Not only does Cummins have a very honest approach to published horsepower ratings, electronics offer the engine builder the ability to tailor the power curve to suit a specific application. Just take a look at the QSB 380 Data Sheet the real power comes in early, ideal for getting a deep vee hull on to the plane and catapult like acceleration.
Although the engines have a rated speed of 3000 Rpm by the time the revs reach 2200 the engines are developing over 350 Hp and give almost constant power up to the rated speed. Which endows Miss Daisy a comfortable cruising speed in the high 30's as well as her stunning top speed.
My last reason for liking the Cummins power is a little less tangible but very appropriate to a classic British Fairey boat. Not only is a substantial amount of the design and research done right here in Britain , but it is also built in Britain at Cummins Darlington Engine Plant.

Since purchasing my QSB 380's new ratings of the engine have been released at 425, 440 and now 480 Horsepower! Believe me I have looked at still greater power, however more power demands still larger gearboxes . I will rest for now and enjoy Miss Daisy just as she is.
